Well I know PR sucks for most webmasters on the outside, but there is no doubt that every webmaster is PR fasinated somewhere deep down inside.

Choice at Utlimated Directory List has consolidated some PR data for the recent update that I thought would be interesting to share.

Basically he has recorded the PR fluctuations on variuos types of web directories.

Here are the results:

Free Directories
PR Up - 43
PR Down - 11
No Change - 14
Extinct - 12
Now Paid - 18

Paid Directories
PR Up - 29
PR Down - 53
No Change - 3
Extinct = 39

Deeplink Directories
PR Up - 33
PR Down - 91
No Change - 16
Extinct - 6

Bidding Directories
PR Up - 81
PR Down - 25
No Change - 23
Extinct - 19

So can we have a conclusion for this data.

Well it is surely a PR algo change that is representating such fluctuations, but concluding the exact tweak can be difficult.

Firstly, believeing that only web directories are being penalized would not be correct as these fluctuations are being observed on all types of websites.

Observing from the trend, the one this that I can concluded is that google has increased the criterias for a good backlink and it has become more tough to pass the PR.

Also, cross linking your sites can be very dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. Many a times I have seen web directories doing mutual cross linking in terms of site wide links or even cross linking their own directories.

Lastly backlink building should be controlled and not overdone. My advise will be to settled down for a while after a PR 5 and then again at a PR 6, if you are looking to achieve a PR 7 in a small span of time, you are bound to raise a flag with Google and even if you do manage to get it, it will be only a matter of time befoe the SE’s flag it.

Go slow on  your link building and a PR7 will be a while but highy sustainable.

We do have some highly promoted directories being banned in Google and well I would not attribute this phenomenon to an algo glitch but would conclude it as a manual intervention.

If you are shying away from starting a web directories, all I can say is that one needs to build on content and there is still lots of money in the business.

If you have a thought to share, please leave me a comment to ponder on :-)
