The latest buzz that taking the webmaster community by storm.
The Google SERPs is standing like the iceberg that sank the Titanic, just this time the Titanic is symbolic for the general web directories.
Huge SERPs change for web directories in general and it seems that some of the best promoted sites have been hit hard.
At the moment, directories like Alive and Aviva have lost the SERPs for their own names.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=aviva+directory
All directories are reported to have lost their SERPs for not just competitive keywords, but for basic ones as well.
If Google is really penalizing the web directory lot, then once its all over, only the ones with real content would be standing strong.
The only offence that Google seems to have taken is the issue with paid links being the only motive of the existence of most web directories.
Whether its true or just a update glitch, only time will tell and the one thing that we can be sure off is that “This will be a time to be remember for quite a while”
I guess it time to start thinking about our motives and redefine our purpose for building a web directory.

1Well I really feel that this is just a temporary glitch. If G has really taken a personal revenge against directories, then no one can help… !

2I have noticed a drop in rankings for all the directories that I make in general to append to any site I build for reciprocals and stuff. I found your blog because I was looking for an alternative to the kind of reciprocal links directories I usually install which seem to have deprecated (sounds a bit stinky that… ;P)
I am thinking only way forward is to hand do directory in static html with a form submission where people can tell me what they want put and I can SEO the pages they are on by hand.
Impossible for large directories I know, but for my little sites seems it might be the answer.
Both my directories at Hairstylezone and at Findallsorts Price Comparison have had page rank greyed out.
Even though the scripts for these directories is seo friendly and once at Hairstylezone at least, did have a low page rank at least.
Google wants us to work harder I guess!

4It’s November now and nothing has change. I did notice during that time that some strong directories lost PR.
DirectoryDump.com from PR6 to PR4
AvivaDirectory.com from PR6 (at least) to PR4
EasyFindDirectory from PR5 (at least) to PR3
Adonde from PR6 (before Sep) then PR5 and now PR4
So it’s possible these changes ocurred in September and also before.
I still believe in directories, just that they are not as effective as they used to be,
