Please note:
This article is written in continuation of “DT’s Startup Guide: Learning to build a web directory”
“Getting your motivation right” is very important to build a successful web directory, as the directory business for quality web directories may not be saturated but can experience dry days to begin with.
But then again there is always a brighter side, for one thing maintaining and updating a web directory can be the easiest and the link sales can get sweet once you are in a position to deliver a SERP advantage and reasonable exposure to the websites listed in your directory.
Yes, there is money in this market and this is a genuine business option to pursue.
So if you want to start a website as a hobby or as an additional source of income, you can consider starting a web directory.
Let me define a web directory:
A web directory, opps i forget we always have the wiki ;-)
Web Directory as defined in the wiki
A web directory is a directory on the World Wide Web. It specializes in linking to other web sites and categorizing those links.
So basically you can monetize a web directory by selling links to websites that want the SERP advantage and would like to promote themselves via targeted exposure.
The game plan is pretty simple, start a web directory with a investment budget ranging for a few hundred dollars to a couple of thousand dollar (as per your income availablity), promote it and brand it, get a PR (Page Rank) advantage and plough back a part of your income in ongoing link building and promotion.
This can effectively get you a few hundred / thousand dollars with just an initial effort to begin with.
So if you are convinced that you would like to try out your hand, read on.
Cost incurred till the end of Part I: 0$
